Hi everyone! Xintox here! In this thread I'm asking everyone what they think of the new farming items added in the latest snapshot: potatoes and carrots. I personally think its really cool to have some new vegetables in the game but I was wondering-how do you think we will be able to get them? In a dungeon? Dropped by mobs? What do you think?

Feel free to voice your opinion in the forums below! :)

I think there will be a way to get them in a future snapshot.

I was I believe was CaptainSparkles' video of the snapshot and he said that carrots and potatoes will be a new drop added to zombies. So when you kill them there is a chance that you will get a carrot or a potato. I might edit this post if I am wrong but I'm sure that they are a new zombie drop.

They are currently dropped by Zombies as a rare item I belive, I think they may eventually be able to be obtained via Villager trading, perhaps dungeons, I have a feeling a new crop may be added to Villages as just wheat is rather simple, perhaps they may grow in villages planting areas. :)

its a rare drop about as rare as an Iron Sword. the Carrot, well, is the same rarity.
If you thought this post was useful, a like is very much appreciated. :)

***what I would like***
I like the villager trading idea, possibly found naturally in plains biomes.
***what is***
a 1/40 chance drop from Zombies (rare drop) why? don't ask me...

I'm guessing the villagers will grow them more instead of just wheat.

As of the current snapshot(12w34b) the only way to obtain both carrot's an potatoes is by rare drop from a Zombie.
Jeb tweeted that he might add them to villager trading, If i remember correctly he also started a reddit page asking people what different ways you could obtain them.(but I can't seem to find the page anymore -_-)

I think it would be fine if you could get them by either a rare drop from a zombie, an villager trading :)

There is a very rare chance that zombies drop potatoes. But thanks for this thread. I was wondering this exact same thing.

You may like this post, but be aware, you are probably not doing it by your own accord. You probably just saw one of the Silence, and it made you like this post with post-hypnotic suggestion. You won't remember it, no one can. When you see a Silence, it tells you to do something. Then when you look away, you forget you ever saw a Silence. They've ruled the world since the beginnings of civilization with post-hypnotic suggestion. Whenever they need something, they merely tell someone to do it.

Actually the drop doesn't come from zombies according to this snap shot... you grow them! The snap shot in this vid includs alot of new things like dyeing dog collars and leather armour and bringing mobs like dogs and pigs etc. into the nether! :o Please take 9 and 13 secs to watch this vid I shows just about everything sweet :D Minecraft just went up a notch.... sorry could help it I had to say it but it's true!

EDIT: So I see that the seeds drop from zombies ok and cool! I wonder if npc zombies will be the ones to drop them but, it's probably just from any zombie. That would be cool if npc's farmed them though even though that would defeat the point of a rare drop BUT like with coca beans they used to be a rare drop and now there in the jungles. The same thing has a chance of happening to potatoes and carrots I believe.

Well, you do grow them, but where do you get the seeds? I think what they were trying to say is that the seed potatoes and carrots come from zombies. :P I think that if they come from zombies that is really cool! It now gives me a reason to kill zombies. ;)

As others have already states, you get them from zombie drops in the current snapshot. Once you get them, you can plant them to grow more, with each mature plant will yield 1 to 4 crops, which can be replanted again.

What use are they? Each is a new food source, and much like raw pork and beef, give little if eaten raw. However, the potatoes can be baked (smelted) in a furnace, and is pretty close to the same as cooked chicken. And the carrots can be combined with gold nuggets to produce golden carrots, which are very much the same as golden apples. They can also be used to make a night vision potion.

One other possible use that was hinted at is to combine a carrot with a fishing rod, and it could be used to steer a pig you ride (with a saddle). Currently, there is no way to control the pig's movement when you ride them, but that might change soon. It's kind of a play on the "Carrot and Stick" persuasion technique - The carrot is reward for good behavior, and the stick is punishment for bad behavior.

you must first invent the universe. -- Carl Sagan

Thanks for the continuing info guys! I think we've firmly established now that they are a very rare drop from zombies (not as strange as feathers!) and I agree-it would be cool to see them in dungeon chests or villages that have them naturally growing! :)

I wasn't sure how to obtain them either, good to know they're a mob drop and not from terrain/chests. I'm excited for the new features, but getting tired of having to generate new chunks to get them.

Actually, you can get potatoes and carrots not just from zombies. I did some testing, and it turns out that village farms can have potatoes and carrots from the latest snapshot.

Potatos should be specific to the extreme hills biome, and carrots to the forest biome as zombies carrying carrots and potatoes? Oh pleeeeease! What are they thinking? :P
