In minecraft one point three I've noticed allot of things being added are extremely useful for adventure maps. Tripwires, Adventure mode,
Arrows activating pressure pads, Writable books, dispensers dispensing water, boats, and minecarts, silverfish blocks in creative mode, and easier create mob spawners! All of these things (in my opinion) have great potential in adventure maps!

Indeed! I've been thinking the same as I've been testing out all the test builds. I'm actually currently working on a large open world/sandbox adventure map that is waiting until 1.3 to release before I upload. It's roughly 12000 x 12000 blocks  and riddled with all sorts of challenges and such.

Have you made any adventure maps? :)

You are right on that one. My friend always makes mini maps for me to play and he told me he has a lot of good ideas for one! i can't wait

I used World Painter to set the initial continent and have been tweaking and playing with the rest by hand. I'm sure there are other tools that would make it faster... lol

Ok. Thanks! I've always wanted to do a custom map, but have never been able to find the right program.

WorldPainter is rather easy to pick up but looks like it's quite powerful as well, lots of advanced settings. I played with it for a few weeks before even touching any projects. Like I said, right now I'm working a 12,000 x 12,000 map, aiming to release with 1.3! I'm such a newb when it comes to stuff like this but I've also got OCD... Haha. If you ever want pointers, etc feel free to message. :)

Yea! Especially if you set a rule that you can't place down normal chests, etc. Heh, the writeable books are a dream come true!

Use Single Player Commands, with the command "spawner" and then the mob id number. Zombies are 54, blazes 61.... You can get the numbers with the command "spawn list".
It's pronounced "Y-X".

Please like my posts if they are helpful, funny, or flat out awesome.

ender chests would definatly be great seeing as if theres a lava challenge and u dont want to lose all of your items, u can put one at the beginning to store items safely and one at the end to re obtain items.
