the reason that fraps records for only a few seconds is because you have to buy it for it to work more...
i use playclaw, because it was on giveaway of the day, and paul used to use it... i plan on using playclaw when i start a youtube channel

I use screenflow (Mac users represent!) for recording and editing, but i happen to know you can use quicktime to record on Mac's too, just for those of you who want to record on macs.

I personally use Fraps and Adobe After Effects. And I warn you about Primere Elements, is it is very unfriendly with Fraps, and doesnt work well, so if you use fraps, I dont suggest Primiere Elements.

Try BandiCam. Anyway, the problem you are having with Fraps is probably because you are using the free version. It only records for thirty seconds.

I gotta give love to bandicam. It actually took me a while to find it and I use it all the time.
