Hey Guys!

I am looking at the game Skyrim for a Thirteen Year Old but I have never played the game and I do not know if the "Adult" themes are appropriate.

Here is what I do know:

The child if pretty mature for 13

Skyrim is an amazing game

It is rated M

It has a variety of adult themes

It has pretty graphic violence

Let me know what you got from your experiences playing it. Thanks!

Hmm well I think that skyrim is meant for older gamers. But if you think he's mature enough you can go ahead. I though would pref to find a different game though.

It's rated M for a reason. 17+

I simply don't understand why parents buy their children whatever game they want without looking first at the rating.
Besides, unless you grew up with games like Super Metroid and Legend of Zelda, you might find the game a little more difficult than usual.

I grew up on games. First (home) video game I ever played was TMNT for the NES. From then on out I was a confirmed gamer.

Anywho. To answer your question. It's rated M for Mature because of the adult themes. I wouldn't consider purchasing the game for a 13 year old, no matter how mature they are. =/

If you think you're mature enough to play, than play.  But I would find a game like Skyrim, nut for younger players.

Yeah it is. But once in the game there's a reference to *** slaves.

I'm going to love and tolerate the crap out of you.

It's ok, There are plenty of kids that I know that play skyrim. The violence isn't that bad, but there is (kind of) a lot of blood. It won't make kids act like complete weirdos like call of duty does, though. If he's mature, then buy it!

The way they say the bit about blood and body parts is a little inaccurate as the graphics are good but not that good. Drinking is everyday thing and I mean they probably see you doing it now and then on the weekends so its not that bad. Marriage is not a sexual refrence and through 40 hours of gameplay iam yet to see any such content.

I rather resent the comment about it being ridiculous for parents to buy older games for teens as the youngest of three I grew up watching my older bros playing 18+ games all the time and when I was 14 i purchased the full set of gta games that waere available because my parents deemed that i was mature enough. (I was given alot of freedom to grow up in my own way) Im not saying its a good thing to buy these games but skyrim is a fantasy game and is fine. It certainly hasnt turned me into a madman lol!

Personally, I wouldn't let a 13-year-old play Skyrim or any other games that have an M rating, but it's not because I think they would grow up to be psychotic killers.  I am not going to explain my reasons in a public forum though, because some people might take it personally.  But, either way, it's up to parents to decide what they are willing to expose their kids to and where to draw the line.

Skyrim is a pretty graphic game. It contains many things that make a game rated M. However, there are many different ways you can play it, and if you are not the violent type you can tweak the gameplay to do less violent things. There are quests that require you to go on a killing rampage and there are quests that have you go explore dungeons. You can go explore the dungeons which may contain some people that you may have to kill to get by, but a lot of the time in these dungeons there are monsters which you can kill instead. Your character can be fitted to be a sneaky player, so instead of running with your battleaxe with the intent to attack everyone in your way, you can stick to the shadows and sneak around.

In my experience, from what it says on the box (Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Sexual Themes, Use of Alcohol), most of that deems true. There is most definitely Blood and Gore in this game, but I think there may be an option to turn it off, however don't hold me to that. There most surely is Intense Violence; dragons in the game eat people, burn them, you may have to kill people, etc in order to complete quests. I haven't really seen much on Sexual Themes, and it may be referring to marriage, which isn't a very big part in the game, and it's completely optional. Finally the use of alcohol. In the game you have the option to eat various foods and drink various drinks which may contain Alcohol. There is also a side quest, which is also a small, small part, and completely optional, to have a drinking contest.

Skyrim also has a community of mod makers. A lot of these mods are very useful and fun in the game, however there are some suggestive ones on there. If you do end up getting your son Skyrim, these mods are not something that should be used. In the end, Skyrim most surely holds true to it's M rating. However you can make it less violent than it's made out to be. Try and pick the less violent quests, don't go on rampages through towns, turn off the blood (If theres an option), and don't get the suggestive mods for it. Skyrim is an amazing game, the landscapes are beautiful, there is a variety of things to do, and lots of fun to be had. Overall what is in the game is present in a lot of PG-13 movies. If your son can handle these movies well, he will be able to handle Skyrim. I would suggest watching a few videos on Skyrim content, and of course if he watches Paul's Skyrim series, that is a great example of Paul not doing violent things to make the game a bit more appropriate.

There are also a few games that could take place of Skyrim. My suggestion I am about to put out may not be as good as Skyrim, however it still has the same qualities and can provide the same experience. This is the Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. this game came out a good number of years before Skyrim, so the graphics are not nearly as good. However, the sound is good, gameplay mechanics are smooth, and it is still as fun. It does have the same reasons for it being M, Blood and Gore, Language, Sexual Themes, Use of Alcohol, and Violence, however since it is older, it may be a good option to try before Skyrim.

It's the parents choice on what the child plays and is exposed to. My mom has not been strict at all, so I am open to these kinds of games, and me as myself pick the games I will like, and would be appropriate for me as a person. Even though I have been playing M since I was 10 or 11, I am not a violent person, I don't have any desire to commit the actions in the games in real life, and I feel like I am mature about this kind of stuff. I would never play GTA just because most of the game is killing people, stealing, robbery, and those kind of things, but however I play the games that are more than just committing crimes for enjoyment. It's your choice to judge whether your 13 year old is mature enough for it in the end.

Well I have it and play it quite often. I havn't seen many "adult themes" other than blood and some cussing, but thats frankly daily. Other than that there really isn't much, besides drinking. And as another member said you don't have to do every thing violent. As long as they are mature enough, buy it and return if you don't like it.

Personally I have watched Paul's Skyrim videos and I would rate it T not M. It is more of an adventure game, a little harder that Minecraft and has a lot more depth. I would say maybe just look on the wiki and if you like it watch a few of Paul's videos and if you lik those I would say play it. However I would suggest telling your parents that you are going to play it because my friend once got into hot water with his parents this way.

It really is the parents choice. But some things to consider are. One, how mature is my child? (If they still make potty jokes I suggest a diffrent game.) Two, will my child be influenced by this game? (If they are someone who thinks that killing, mauling, etc. is OK then I DEFININTLY suggest a diffrent game.)

I also own Skyrim so here is some of the things that might worry you. The blood is pretty minimal although once you upgrade your charecter a bit it is possible to decapitate people. (Heads and arms are what I have seen.) The only substances in the game are alchol based beverages and it is impossible to get drunk except for one quest. You do mess some things up in your drunken state but you can repair these damages by finishing the quest line. As for sexual refrences it is pretty minimal for an open-world game. There is one refrence to sex slaves although I have yet to find it. (Big game.) You can also get married although all your spouse does is make money through selling items for you. After that there is not much of a point in getting married withen the game.

Hope this helps a bit.

Skyrim isn't too graphic or bloody, and / or bad for a 13 year old. It is really a regular adventure game, but in first person. It barely has blood, but then again, don't most games have blood? In terms of it being bad for a child, i would say it is fine for anyone over the age of 12.

Also after eading a post about the suggestive mods just make sure you get your child the console version for xbox etc because there are no mods for that and the ones that are there are like impossible for a 13 year old to install because of all the xbox hacking required lol

also sorry if my post earlier sounded harsh i was on my ipad and its a paint writing on there so I wanted it to be quick and straight to the point.

I think that you dont have to wait till your 17+ to play this game but 13 is a little to young. Try 15 or if he/she is mature enough, 14.

Ok this made me chage my mind. I would say it would be for about Older Teen if there was a rating like that. But since there is not I would say it deserves M.
