Does anyone think that any recent games could become a classic? Personally, I think that the Little Big Planet games are the most original and classic games of the generation. What are your thought? Are all games now a days just knock offs of other games? Or are there those few gems that are going to be classic 20-50 years from now?

...what about minecraft!

Assassin's creed is pretty new, and the franchise has continued, so it must be somewhat successful.

I agree with Minecraft, and even though I love Assassins Creed, I don't think of it as a classic in 20 years.

I think Skyrim is going to become a classic eventually, just like the other Elder Scrolls games. The epicness (not epic as in "dude, totally epic" but epic as in... well, epic), the music, the arrows in the knees and even the bugs. There is so much to remember about that game and to keep future players interested for many years.

I guess in a way World of Warcraft already is a classic, for better and for worse, for quite obvious reasons.

I'm not sure. To me, a game can't be classic until it's survived the test of time, and obviously "recent" games don't do that. Although, SimCity 4, made in 2003, is still widely sold and played, and is considered the epitome of city building games - I'm just not sure if it's old enough to be considered "classic."

Then again, I have a very peculiar taste in videogames, so perhaps I'm not the best person to ask.

I personally look for games that will forever be talked about and brought up when necessary like Doom does when anyone talks about the roots of FPS gaming. To me Amnesia: The Dark Descent will be talked about til the end of time. That game to me is a classic already as it managed to scare pretty much everyone that played it to the core. This wouldn't have been such a feat had it launched in 1995 when the horror game genre was fresh, but Amnesia did it over 18 years later when all scare tactics had all been used, or so we thought..

Assasins Creed, Sim City, Skyrim. Come one guys, these won't become classics? They aren't the new GTA, Zelda, Halo.

The mechwarrior games I think will be, and may already be, classics. Even though they don't have a giant following like some games, they're some of the best games I've ever played. And I've played at least 250 different games.

THIS is what games should be like.

I would say there are a few games or series that will become classics within the next say 5- 10 years.

Though I've never played one, Halo for sure is going to become one. (It already may be, not sure.)
Definitely Rayman Origins, because 2D platformers for 7th generation consoles should be redefining their genre and this one is, along with Little Big Planet.
Uncharted is certainly entering the Hall of Fame.
Tribes Ascend would be a PC-only one.
Minecraft, I mean, Minecraft single-handedly kick-started sandbox games.
I would say that Porject Zomboid (especially if also developed for consoles) could become one monster of a classic.
I also think the Battlefield series will one day attain a similar status to games as Mario.
However, I believe most of these games  will never be counted among the likes of Zelda and Mario, because these were awesome games at the time where a home console didn't have the computing power of a Gameboy Advance, so things all become relative.

Well, it's hard to consider modern games classics, considering the majority of them are just first person shooters. If I could choose one game to be the "classic" game of this generation, I would have to go with Little Big Planet 1.

I also think that an important factor is that there can only be that many "classic"  games, before this classification (no pun intended) becomes meaningless.
If every game is a classic, no game is a classic.

When I think of "classic's" I think of older games from before 2000, and that have graphics that are minimal, but are still fun to play with. Although that will change in 20 years, becasue we will think of games from 2010 as classics, and there graphics will not be up to date with what is being released then. So I think that games that have enjoyed good sales and positive reviews (Yes, even CoD.) will be considered "classic's" by my children. There were TONS of games from the early years of Mario and Zelda that never got the same sales and attention as those that I just listed, but people still heard about them if they were into gaming at the time. Anyone remember Kinect: Star Wars? I do, but my children won't because it was a game that recieved poor reviews and sales, but it had alot of hype before it's release and alot of gamers heard about it.

Games that will probably become classic's. Asassin's Creed, Call of Duty, Total War, Minecraft, Grand Theft Auto, Civilization, and many others.
