#15 Forum Rules And Code Of Conduct (Must Read)

Posted paulsoaresjr on 11 May 2012 - 05:06 PM

POSTING
1) No links to pirate/warez or other illegal content sites

Self-explanatory.

2) Take your time, and do your best with spelling/grammar

No one is expecting perfection, but making your posts easier to read will make it easier for people to respond to you. Effort is appreciated!

3) Put warnings in titles

As a courtesy to others, if your link is a little "blue", or if your thread is full of spoilers, please indicate so.

4) Search for related content before starting new topics

Take a look around the forum. Remember, people replying to you takes effort, so put in a little effort of your own by using the search function and reading through some threads first

5) Unless the thread in question warrants it, any graphic images posted that are deemed inappropriate (hardcore pornography, scat, dead bodies etc are prime examples) will be deleted and the posters treated like spam bots and banned with no warning beyond this one.

6) Do not name threads with spam-like titles

Due to unpleasant content, some of us (eg me) will not look inside spam threads but will immediately delete you and all your posts from the database, both of which are unrecoverable. Don't risk it!

7) From experience, there are some topics that could follow all the rules above and still be likely to cause arguments and unpleasantness (eg. when is the next update out? relgion, politics ect...). We reserve the right to lock these and any other threads we see fit.

8) No posting topics just to "chatter", or make comments to Paul or other staff.

Ex. "Hey Paul, my name is Jim Bob Jones and I like your video!" The forums are not an instant messenger! If you want to chat, use the chat on the website.

9) No editing a mod/admins edit. If your post is edited or removed, it was for a reason.

10) Do not make financial solicitations.

Any solicitation of money either for personal gain or as a donation contribution to Paul (either directly or disguised as a KickStart program,  YouTube community channel, live-stream game marathon...ect), will earn the user a permanent suspension from the forums. It is very unwise to send money to a user you do not know. If a user wishes to donate money to Paul, they should do so directly to Paul to make sure that he is the one receiving the donation.

11) No making troll accounts with the specific intention of trolling either the website or it's members. This includes pretending to be someone you're not i.e. a famous YouTuber. We can easily check ip's and will ban the ip of anyone that is seen to have a troll account regardless of who they are.

12) No topic "bumping" (posting information in a topic for the sole purpose of "bumping" it to the top of the forum).

13) Post topics in the correct forum: 14) Use your profile status feed and blog posts for personal status updates, role-playing stories, and other similar topics.

15) Do not multi-post.

Edit your original post if you need to make a change or clarification. Also, use multi-quote to quote multiple people.

PICTURES
1) As a way to avoid those pesky "image-stretching-the-forum-making-it-hard-to-read" situations, the maximum width of images should be no more than 650 pixels.
You can do this by either resizing your pictures; postig a thumbnail which links to the full-size image; or making a text link to your image.
All of these methods can be easily done in image sharing sites like http://imgur.com
2) No image macros unless it is in an image dump thread.

PROFILE STUFF
1) No pics or videos in signatures
They make it more difficult to read threads and clutter up the forum.
2) Tasteful avatars, please

#17449 Forum Frequently Asked Questions

Posted paulsoaresjr on 17 May 2012 - 02:03 AM

What are the forum member titles/ranks?

Due to the amount of threads we get asking this, and me not wanting to put it in the main post, here is the ranks you get for posting in the forums:
  • 1 - 25  New
  • 26 - 99  Punching Wood
  • 100 - 499  Chicken Slayer
  • 500 -  999  Expert Survivalist
  • 1000 +  Wilderness Expert

Remember quality over quantity. Do not spam the forums to get a better rank. These ranks are NOT important and in no way impact on you getting on the whitelist. Post GOOD quality, informative posts that ADD something to the topic.

What is "Mini-Modding"?

The term "Mini-Modding" refers to someone pretending to be a Moderator. For example, if someone in the chat room yells out something like "HI GUYS!" some people will bounce on them by saying "Caps!". Or when someone spams the chat with repetitive phrases, some people will say "No spamming!" That is Mini-Modding and it will not be tolerated. Simply "report" the member on his/her profile page for breaking the rules.

What is "spam"?

While the term "spam" has different meanings in different contexts, at Punchwood "spam" is essentially "any content that is unwelcome" - including, but not limited to: advertisements, duplicate responses, caps-lock posts, obscene writing etc. If you see such content, please report it (or report the member responsible).

1) This includes multiple consecutive posts in the same thread (Use "Edit" to add more), pointless posts/threads that do not add to the topic (eg. "Cool", "Don't know it" etc).
2) Please refrain from posting in spam threads, as it makes it take longer to delete. Just ignore or use the report function.
3) Another common form of spam is consecutive or random numbers, letter, symbols, or emoticons that hold no specific meaning or value. (eg. "jhskjdghksjdg". "!!!!!!!!!!!!!!", " :paul: :paul: :paul: :paul: :paul:" etc).

How do I "report" a post?

At the bottom right-hand corner of every post, there should be a few options such as "multi-quote, quote, and report". Select the "report" option. In the text box, provide a brief description of what rule was broken and where. After that, just press send. To do this on a mobile device, you must first scroll down the bottom of the page and press "full version" and follow the instructions above.
NOTE: This is STRICTLY to report anything that breaks the rules and should not be used as any other form of communication with the staff.

ANOTHER NOTE: If the topic is a duplicate, please provide a link to the original topic either in the forum thread or the report.

How do I "report" a member?

On every member's profile page, there should be a "report this member" button. Scroll all the way down the screen and look to the bottom right-hand corner. Press the "report this member" button and provide a brief description as to what rule was broken and where it occurred. To do this on a mobile device, you must first scroll down the bottom of the page and press "full version" and follow the instructions above.
REMEMBER: Reports are only to be used to report things that break the rules and not a form of communication with the staff.

Someone broke the rules in chat, but there are no staff present! What do I do?

The best thing to do is take a screen-shot of the member breaking the rules, and including it in the report.

#42090 Forum Changes Coming Soon!

Posted paulsoaresjr on 27 May 2012 - 02:30 PM

Hello!

Just a quick heads up that I'm hoping to get some time this week to make some needed changes to the forum layout. I'm planning on consolidating existing subforums and creating a few new ones as well.

I'm also going to be checking out some skins so you'll have the option of the choosing the current skin and at least one new one.

OK, that's it for now!

Paul

#53871 T-Shirts N' Stuff! (Closed)

Posted paulsoaresjr on 04 June 2012 - 12:49 PM

Please use this thread for submitting new ideas.

Lots of folks asking about T-shirts so I'm looking into a "shop" at Spreadshirt. I'll need some ideas for the prints but for starters I'm thinking a general "Punchwood.com" shirt plus a few with favorite/most well-known sayings/memes/images from some of my videos. For example, a Spy-chicken interrogation is a must!  Pablo Punchwood with Wilson seems appropriate. King Punchwood and Squire Beans?  Stuff like that.

Got any ideas? Memorable sayings/moments? Let me know in this thread!

#11778 Chat Room Rules

Posted paulsoaresjr on 14 May 2012 - 10:46 PM

Chat room Rules and FAQ:
  • No typing messages in ALL-CAPS
  • No swearing (This includes replacing letters with symbols)
  • No spamming
  • No links AT ALL
  • No YouTube promotion
  • No server promotion
  • No server IP's
  • No personal info (age, skype, etc)
  • No smothering VIP's (Paul & family)
  • No asking about MCD Server whitelist
FAQ

Why are CAPS prohibited:

The no-caps rule is intended to prohibit excessive use of all-caps - such as writing full sentences or other blocks of text in all-caps - not to prohibit legitimate/appropriate uses of caps. For example, use of all-caps is grammatically correct for acronyms, and can also be used for appropriate emphasis.

What is spam:

Spam is anything that is offensive, inappropriate, or that does not add to the conversation. Chat spam includes, but is not limited to: nonsense/gibberish, excessive repetition, using a language other than English, excessive use of emoticons, and cluttering/monopolizing the chat.

Why are links prohibited:

Links are banned because they clutter the chat window, and because they can be used to easily to post content that is offensive/inappropriate to users, or malicious/harmful to users' computers. You may use private chat to share links, but only if such links are requested by and beneficial to the user with whom you share the link. Using private chat to share unsolicited links is considered spam.

Note: at their sole discretion, forum moderators or admins may post links in chat.

Why is promotion/sharing of server IPs prohibited:

Sharing server IPs via chat is prohibited because allowing such sharing would be too prone to abuse. Use the Minecraft Discussion -> Servers forum to discuss Minecraft servers, and use PMs to share private server IP addresses. As with sharing links, only share server IP addresses with users who have requested you to do so. Using private messages or private chat to share unsolicited server IP addresses is considered spam.

What are the rules on personal info:

Look here for a great explanation by Kota Stomper.

What is Mini-Modding:

Mini-modding is any action by a non-staff member to enforce rules or otherwise act as a moderator. It is the sole responsibility of Punchwood admins/staff to enforce site rules, and attempts by non-moderators are generally unhelpful and counter-productive.

What do I do if someone is breaking a rule and there are no mods/admins online?

If there are no mods/admins online, please try to take screenshots of the rules being broken. You can then report the persons profile with links to the screenshots. This will help tremendously and mods/admins can act quickly on dealing with the person.

How do I take a screenshot:

Using Windows:
  • Use the Print Screen button to take a screenshot, which is saved on the clipboard. Then paste the contents of the clipboard into MS Paint, and save the image.
Using Mac:
  • Press [shift][cmd][3] at the same time to save the screenshot image to the desktop.
Once you have saved the image file, upload it to an image-sharing website, and then link to the uploaded image when you report the player.

What are Chat Wars and why are they prohibited:

Chat Wars are role-playing fighting or wars in the chat, such as, "Bob hits Frank with sword." Chat Wars are prohibited because it clutters the chat, because it can be considered inappropriate by some, and because it excludes players not involved with the Chat War. If you wish to engage in Chat Wars, please use another medium, such as Skype.

What words are considered swearing:

We consider any word that could offend any member a "swear" word. This includes well knows swear words, religious swears and words that one can consider being in a "grey" area of words. Remember Punchwood is a home to people of all ages, so just because a word isn't a swear word to you, it doesn't mean other people won't still be offended. Basically, if you're not sure or you think it may offend someone, don't use the word!

On a side note, if any staff member asks you not to use a word - do not use the word, do not argue that it's not a swear word, do not make a topic asking others if it should be considered a swear word. A staff members decision is final so if you're asked not to use a word, please do not use it.

#106262 The Punchwood Guide

Posted MCAndrew on 15 July 2012 - 11:19 PM

Spoiler
That up there was my old post about the whitelist and Punchwood. Now, I am going to improve that by adding new information, removing old information, and also, color coding and organizing into sections! It's going to be called, THE PUNCHWOOD GUIDE!

I. Introduction:
Welcome to the Punchwood guide! You're probably here because it is in the rules section, and you are a new member of Punchwood! First off, welcome to Punchwood! This post will help you throughout Punchwood and it keeps you out of trouble. So relax, and let me tell you all there is to Punchwood! Enjoy!
II. The Forums:
Punchwood is a HUGE forum, with sections of gaming, the MCDS server, Asking Paul Questions, etc. So it would be natural to go over them no? Then let's get started!
   1) Rules:
This section will cover the rules, not tell you them, so please read the forum rules before reading this section. Lets jump right in. First off, the forums is a place for everyone to share their information to the world!
Whether it means technical support or a poll about your favorite block in Minecraft, almost everything is shared. So it is important to follow rules so the forums don't get out of hand. That means please refrain from
sharing your skype name, phone number, or basically any personal information unless you are comfortable with sharing it. Also, do not spam, excessively caps, or double post. Foul language is prohibited too. If
you DO break the rules, the forum moderators will either edit your post, remove your post, lock the thread completely, or maybe ban if things get too serious. So keep in mind to follow the rules!
   2) Creating a post/making a thread:
Making threads or posts are highly encouraged here at Punchwood. But there are some things to keep in mind. Don't make duplicate posts or duplicate topics. Make sure your threads and posts are appropriate and
actually help out the forums. Don't just put "I agree" or "What he said". Instead, add more things like constructive criticism. This makes your posts actually worth something to the person reading it. This is also
considered spam, and you don't want to be caught spamming. Also make sure the topic is in the correct section.
   3) Paul's AMAA forums:
This one is a problem. I made this a section because I want everyone to see it. DO NOT post in Paul's AMAA forums unless necessary. This is probably one of my biggest pet peeves in Punchwood. I cannot stress
enough that this forum is for PAUL ONLY. That means you do not have a say in it. People create the question so Paul can answer it, not you. You might think I'm being mean, but it is the rule. By posting there about
you, (Ex. "Whats your favorite ice cream flavor?" and you say "Vanilla) rules are being broken. So don't do it.
   4) Arguing:
This also gets under my skin. Punchwood is not a place for arguing. Its a friendly community, if you have something to argue about, do it in a private chat or private PM. You can get the topic locked for doing this.
Also, if someone proves you wrong, and you can't prove yourself right, give up. Continuously arguing without providing any sort of evidence or a reasonable say, is not good. And you can't create your own rules on
the forum. (Asking for something that will make the topic better is reasonable) What I mean by this is like "A brony can't post here" (No offense to bronies.). You may not discriminate or do something that will offend
other people. Threatening won't do anything either ("You better not talk to me, or I'll get you banned!"). To wrap it up, don't argue in public, don't offend people, or do whatever you want because you create the
   topic.

THERE WILL BE MORE INFORMATION COMING SOON!

#222743 New Administrator: Kotastomper

Posted paulsoaresjr on 22 November 2012 - 02:07 AM

With the recent resignation of the amazing Necari, I hereby promote KotaStomper to Punchwood Administrator! He's got big shoes to fill but I'm sure he's up to the task. Congratulations, Kota!

#335251 New Minecraft Servers Are Coming!

Posted paulsoaresjr on 17 May 2013 - 09:43 PM

Yes, I said "servers", plural. Without getting into too much detail now, let me just tease you a bit:

1) Punchwood Official Minecraft Server (PWS? POMS? PMC? PMS...um, no)
This is the newly minted "Minecraft Dad" server. New host, new map, new beginnings... but with the same awesome staff and same whitelist. Shooting for a June 1st grand opening, my birthday. :)

2) Punchwood Hunger Games
I have partnered with my friends at Shotbow Network to provide Punchwood.com members with its very own Shotbow Games server (aka "Hunger Games). Though it will be "public" most of the time, we have the capacity to do private events as well.

Anyway, I'll have more details soon.  :)

Thanks!

#266099 6-Year-Old Fan Message

Posted Alaynatori on 28 January 2013 - 07:37 AM

I registered solely for the purpose of creating this post. My daughter, Alayna, thinks Paul is better than breakfast.

Haha, seriously. There are times I find her next to my bed and say, "Good morning, sweetie." She then says, "Good morning! Can I watch Minecraft tutorials?"
Other times I wake up to the sound of Survive and Thrive season one or two from the computer in the playroom.

That series is her favorite, and she only recently began exploring the others. Helping her navigate the subscription page is where we found the link to this website.

There are many times that I'll be playing Minecraft and she says, "Mommy, you forgot the spider helmet!" or "There's a spy chicken in your house! Kill it!"

Watching the videos has even become a family activity. Last night we finished dinner and found all four of us in the living room watching some season four Survive and Thrive before I gave both the girls their bath. (It's a bit over the 13-month old's head, but she still loves watching it for the cats and dogs. I think Sammy is Kate's favorite.)

I thought it would be cool if Alayna could get a message from Paul, but even if she doesn't she's pretty excited to see this community.

Thanks for making fun stuff! :)

#20390 Forum Traffic Spikes - Downtime

Posted paulsoaresjr on 18 May 2012 - 06:01 PM

The Round 2 Whitelist Application video I uploaded this morning was responsible for an immediate and steady traffic spike that caused the site to go offline for many folks and I apologize for that. I understand that some of you were unable to get to the application and, thus, did not have a chance to complete it before we closed the app.

Unfortunately, the host's infrastructure is not built to handle this type of load and we put too much strain on it. So I'm going to have to rethink some things. I really do not want to move to a dedicated server because this is basically a past-time and I don't want to take on that kind of responsibility, running my own server. I like this system for its ease of use, simplicity, and performance (outside of these abnormal spikes). The customer service is also top-notch.

So I suppose one solution is to NOT make videos about the Whitelists! That may solve it entirely. I'm paying for a service that is supposed to handle 500 concurrent users and it does so. The average is about 200-300 on any given day but it's the video promotion that puts us over the edge.

So, just thinking out loud here...but  I'll probably hold off on a Round 3 and we may just start hand-picking people from the community once things settle back down.

Once again, I apologize for the frustration in not being able to get to the application.

Cheers!
Paul

#259876 Desto Is Retired As Admin, Reborn As Vip!

Posted paulsoaresjr on 18 January 2013 - 05:05 AM

Hey Punchwooders!

Desto will no longer be handling administrative duties on the forums or the server. This is not any sort of admonishment or conspiracy, it is merely an "executive decision" and I feel I have valid reasons for doing so. I admit that I handled his retirement poorly yesterday and should have communicated it more openly with Desto and the community. That is on me. However, Desto and I had a long chat on Skype tonight and he's accepted my decision with understanding and grace. His new title is "VIP" and he most definitely remains a beloved member of the Punchwood community.

I just want to say how much I truly appreciate Desto's efforts and work as a volunteer Administrator here and on the MCD server over the past year. Desto was absolutely instrumental in keeping the server running smoothly and maintaining the peace both on MCDS and the forums. Thank you, Desto! Enjoy your retirement, put your feet up, and take some time off! You've earned it.

News & Updates:
Firstly I would like to thank everyone whose supported me on this project, it means alot!
I have added This News & Update sections so you can quickly find out what's new. :)

August 29: Biggest Update yet. Added many new features, for a complete list of changes
you can check out the change log below.

News Update: In many posts Paul has hinted on making a new complete series on how to
improve your YouTube channel, so you can expect a series on this from The Best!

-  Attention -

Before we start I want you to understand that this guide is intended to overall improve your video, it does NOT mean that it will get you thousands of subscribers and viewers overnight, No one does. It's all hard work and patience, this guide will only assist you.

- * -

Okay now lets get started, these are some guidelines which are very important.

General Guidelines To Follow:

1. The Topic.
First things first, what your videos about. Why are you recording ? This is an important point as some people wonder off topic, which usually ends up in a boring blunder so it is advised to stick to the topic. It's okay to wonder off just a bit, but only a bit. (This applies for lets plays as well but for further details on lets plays scroll down )

2. The Message.
Don't forget that you’re recording for a reason, so while reviewing your video check if you can understand everything you’re saying and if someone else would understand as well. See if the message you were trying to convey is clear and understandable.

3. Your Intention.
Before you start recording, ask yourself why are you recording? Is it because you enjoy it? Is it because you’re bored? Is it because you want to provide knowledge and/or entertainment? Your intentions are very important and will effect your entire video. Or is it because you want
to make money. If your intentions is to make money, then you've started out completely wrong!

4. Family Friendly.
Be family friendly, no one wants to hear a person who swears in every sentence. Even YouTube prefers videos which are family friendly. If you've ever noticed many of Pauls fan like him because his family friendly videos.

5. Length.
Here is where some people get confused. The length the video should be as much as your topic requires it to be. For tutorials they should be short and to the point. While lets plays or maps can vary in length but make Sure you viewers don’t get bored! Try to break your recordings into parts and cut the parts which you think are boring or unnecessary.

6. Experiment.
Never be afraid to experiment and try to be different, but again don’t over do it. Make your video special, Why would some one watch your video instead of someone else’s?

7.  Have Consistency.
You don’t have to upload daily but give your self a deadline.
Example: Monday: Planning, Tuesday: Recording, Wednesday: Upload & planning for next video.
This way you can upload about two videos a week, which is good enough but three videos would be Ideal. But don’t upload videos which no one wants’ to watch or is point less, just for the heck of uploading videos.

8.  Ask:
It’s always okay to ask for Subscribers, likes and comments but don’t “beg” for it. You can advertise but don’t spam! Don’t “beg” for attention, all that will do is give a bad impression.

9.  Put Some Time & Effort!
If you work hard and put time and effort in your video it will show and you will be rewarded. Nothing absolutely nothing is achieved effortless.

10. Be Everywhere!
From Facebook to twitter to Google+! Make sure your YouTube channel is Everywhere!

Before Recording: (Planning & Setting The Stage)

There are some things you must do before you start recording, to make sure nothing goes wrong while recording.

1.  Plan Your Video

Before you start recording plan your video. Know exactly what you’re going to say and what you’re going to do. Plan the ending, the beginning and everything in between. Know exactly what message you want conveyed and how you will achieve that.

2. Check List

It doesn't actually have to be a list but do an over all check up of your recording software, microphone and Minecraft.

3.  Set The Stage.

It’s always a good idea, especially for a tutorial, to decorate the area where you’re recording or at least make it more presentable.

4.  Almost Ready!

Before you record remember to be confident and have a back plan if something doesn't work out. Clear your throat and go for it!

While Recording: (Confidence & Speech)

While you record be confident and make sure your speech is clear, if it isn’t a live stream then it won’t hurt to record one part again.

1.Be Confident.

2.  Speak Clearly.

3. Speak Enthusiastically (Don’t talk in one tone, sound excited or happy)

4. Don’t Copy Others (Don’t try to copy other Youtubers, it won’t get you any where and plus it gives a negative impression.)

5. Add Some Humor (Add a good joke or two but remember don’t over do it)

6. Add Some Interest (Add an interesting story or two. *But remember only for Lets Plays as tutorials need to be to the point)

After Recording: (Editing & Reviewing)

Now this is the part which usually takes a long time and needs attention.

1.Get A Good Editing Software.

Paid:-

1. Camtasia - The other frequently used recording and editing software, Camtasia has more options but also costs a hefty amount  more.
Camtasia also features a free 30 day trial listed here:

To purchase the full version of Camtasia, please visit here:

For a written tutorial on operating Camtasia:

There are others but this one is my favorite. To view the top ten video editing softwares of 2012 go Here.

Free :-

2.  Windows Movie Maker Live (WMM) - WMM is a free program for Windows operating system.  It provides a very basic but easy to use interface and requires minimal video editing skills to get the hang of.

If you want more free video editing softwares then you can go here.
If You Would Like A Complete Free Softwares List, From Audio Editing To Screen Recording Then Go Here.

2.  Be Professional.
Please, for your videos sake, use grammar! Give your title proper capitalization as it makes it look more presentable.
Have a proper intro and a proper ending.

3. Upload In HD.
It’s always better to upload your video in HD, you can do this by using fullscreen while your record ( F11 )
Here is a video on how to record HD ( Contributed by DragonMaster21 )
